A berth is not a number on a receipt. It is a place you can see. As you climb, your quarters change: the plaque on the wall, the registry number stencilled by the hatch, the marks of the crew you brought aboard. The higher you stand, the better the room.

Crew bring crew. A berth can rise by bringing others aboard: each new hand who signs on and clears induction moves you up the register. Money is one way up. Crew is the other.
